Rising American tennis star Taylor Fritz, currently number five in the world, is set to face 26th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina later on Friday for a place in the Wimbledon fourth round.

The 27-year-old Californian booked his place in the third round of the men's singles competition on Wednesday by defeating Canadian rival Gabriel Diallo in a hard-fought contest.

Fritz is now the fourth favorite to win the tournament, with leading bookmakers offering odds of between 18/1 (5.3 percent) and 25/1 (3.8 percent) on his overall victory.

Newsweek reached out to a representative for Fritz via email for comment outside of office hours.

Why It Matters

No American has won the men's singles title at Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, since Pete Sampras in 2000.

While Fritz has won 10 ATP Tour singles titles, he has yet to win a major; however, he did reach the final of the U.S. Open last year.

What To Know

Bookmakers William Hill, Spread Ex and Ladbrokes are all offering odds of 18/1 (5.3 percent) on Fritz winning the 2025 men's Wimbledon singles title, behind Spanish favorite Carlos Alcaraz, Italy's Jannik Sinner and Serbian legend Novak Djokovic. Britain's Jake Draper had been fourth favorite with all three companies until he was knocked out of the tournament by veteran Marin Cilic on Thursday.

William Hill has 2024 Wimbledon winner Alcaraz on 6/5 (45.5 percent), Sinner on 6/4 (40 percent) and Djokovic on 9/2 (18.2 percent). For Spread Ex Alcarez has 5/4 (44.4 percent), Sinner 6/4 (40 percent) and Djokovic 5/1 (16.7 percent). Finally Ladbrokes put Alcaraz on 11/10 (47.6 percent), Sinner on 6/4 (40 percent) and gave Djokovic overall victory odds of 9/2 (18.2 percent).

Bet365 gives Fritz odds of 22/1 (4.3 percent) of winning the 2025 Wimbledon men's single title, behind Alcaraz on 11/10 (47.6 percent), Sinner with 11/8 (42.1 percent) and Djokovic on 9/2 (18.2 percent).

BoyleSports is offering odds of 25/1 (3.8 percent) on competition victory for Fritz, compared with 5/4 (44.4 percent) for Alcaraz, 6/4 (40 percent) for Sinner and Djokovic with 5/1 (16.7 percent).

All odds are accurate as of 5:00 a.m. ET on Friday.

On Wednesday, Fritz beat Canada's Diallo 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3 to reach Wimbledon's third round, in three hours and six minutes.

Monday, the first day of Wimbledon, saw Fritz face France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. However, the fifth set was played on Tuesday because officials decided they didn't have enough time before the competition's 11 p.m. BST (6:00 p.m. ET) curfew.

Fritz came back from behind to win 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 and 6-4.

What People Are Saying

Speaking after his victory on Wednesday, Fritz said: "That's an incredibly hard match. The fourth set – I don't think there's much that I did wrong at all and I kind of felt like that's the way the match was going: I was going to have to play near perfect when I got my opportunities. I'm happy to get through that."

Portuguese tennis commentator José Morgado said on X, formerly Twitter, that Fritz was now the "clear favorite to reach the semifinals in his quarter."

Fritz is due to play Spain's Davidovich Fokina on Centre Court at 1.30 p.m. BST on Friday.
